Commercial Tire Maintenance Program
The purpose of a good tire maintenance program is to lower your total tire cost. The fact that tires are one of the most costly maintenance items in a fleet's operation makes good tire maintenance program a necessity. A good tire maintenance program should include the following items:
Air Pressure
Your fleet should have a standardized air pressure for each axle. Steering, drive, and trailer. Air pressure is the most over looked maintenance procedure in most fleets, yet it is the easiest to administer. Maintaining proper air pressure will allow you to get the maximum life out of your tire. It also helps maintain the integrity of the casing so it can be retreaded to further reduces your tire cost. Our technicians will work from the tire manufacture's recommendation to determine the correct inflation pressure for each application in your fleet.
Tire Pull Point
It is recommended a fleet establish tire pull points for each axle and application in your fleet. This will keep from destroying casings that could be retreaded. We recommend a pull point of no less than 4/32 for all wheel positions.
Casing, Age Limit
Specific applications may destroy casings before they reach the end of their life cycle. However, a fleet should set an age limit on casings to retread. Premium grade "A" casings can improve your cost per mile by reducing down time and related costs.
Dual Matching
For maximum tire life dual tires must be matched by size, construction, outside diameter and air pressure.
Proper Repair Procedures
Ensure all personnel are trained in the proper repair procedures. This will ensure your fleet receives the maximum life from its tires and casings.

Full Service Bandag Retread Facility

Truck tire retreading has become so popular that truckers annually purchase about 19.4 million retreads, compared to only 14.5 million new replacement tires.
It is estimated those retread purchases result in more than $2 billion dollar annual savings for the trucking industry. Most fleet managers find that by the time the original tread is worn off the tire they have used only 30 percent of their new tire investment. To capture the rest of that investment and substantial operating cost savings, they retread their worn casings.
Even with those potential savings, there are a good number of owner-operators who say, "I can't run retreads because I have to travel through the desert. I can't run retreads because I carry too much weight. I can't run retreads because they come apart and damage my equipment."
What they are really saying is, "I don't want a piece of the $2 billion pie because I don't know how to maintain my tires like the fleets do."
Fleets can't afford to have their equipment torn up by failed tires anymore than an owner-operator can. With just-in-time freight and guaranteed delivery times, they can't afford enroute tire failures anymore than owner-operators can.
Fleets have to carry those same heavy payloads and travel through the desert and other hot regions of the country just like owner-operators do. Fleet managers know that with today's technology, retreads don't come apart. If a tire fails and throws alligators all over the highway they know it's the result of a casing failure. The wire protruding from the rubber is a clear indication that it is not the result of a retread failure. Retreaders don't put wire in the rubber.
Fleet managers also know that consistent and proper use of an air pressure gauge is their best insurance again enroute tire failures. They also know that stringent casing inspection standards and a good retread supplier are key to their success. Don't buy retreads on the road from a vendor who knows he won't see you again. Establish a relationship with a local retread supplier who knows you will be home on the weekend to talk to him about any tire problems you might experience during the week.
In those instances when you do have to make a tire purchase on the road, don't buy the cheapest retread you can get. Insist on a quality tire like a Bandag Emergency Tire Assistance (ETA) Spec Tire. If you purchase an ETA Spec Tire and it fails in the first 60 days of use, not only do you get the tire replaced, but the cost of the service call is also covered.
Most important, remember tires must be maintained. Regardless of whether you are running on new tires or retreads, consistent air pressure maintenance is the most important factor in a successful tire program. Buy a good air gauge and use it regularly.
Easter Tire and Bandag lead the industry when it comes to tire maintenance programs and top quality, high tech retreading.
